A recent shooting has brought up yet another big issue in Long Island City: Gun violence.
One LIC Spot viewer recently wrote:
Obviously real estate agencies often “battle” each other for business, but never with guns.
Recently councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and other local officials stepped up their efforts to identify who shot a Queensbridge resident earlier this month. This is not the first time Van Bramer has held a rally against gun violence.
The question: Are guns really a problem in Long Island City?

“Queensbridge Tenants Association member April Simpson”
April Simpson is PRESIDENT of Queensbridge Tenants Association
This is second or third shooting at Queensbridge since Van Bramer gave out safety helmets
No, there is no gun trouble in LIC. But before 1990, as I learned earlier this week, LIC was a crime-ridden neighborhood that time forgot.
In the 1980′s we used to hear gunshots about once a week at Queensbridge Houses. Now it is down to about once a month.
We fell safer now.
Of course Queensbridge Houses is a big place, some we don’t hear but others do.
Anon – You couldn’t be more wrong!
I heard that too. lol
LIC girl, you don’t get the irony in Anon’s response.
The answer to the blog post’s question is yes, there is a gun problem in LIC, there’s a gun problem in American and our city and neighborhoods are not immune. If anyone thinks otherwise, they are just fooling themselves.
