Cliffs climbing gym comes to LIC

31 Jan

OK, folks, no more excuses.

The Cliffs, one of the largest climbing gyms in the country, will open in Long Island City this spring. The 30,000 square foot space features inset LED lighting and can accommodate 500 climbers at a time. Its walls will feature crack climbing, top-out boulders, 60 foot leads with up to 35 feet of overhang. There will also be a full-fitness cardio and free weights area.

You can check out their website here.

I have nothing against yoga or cycling but paying $90 a month for “Cliffs” is much more appealing that $150 for yoga or cycling.

I believe the building’s facade picture on their website is the same building located at 9 44th Drive (44th Drive between 11th Street and 21st Street). It’s the building in front of that high school. GREAT ADDITION to that Street!!

Weird thing to put in LIC. Don’t you think?

LIC already has a trapeze school, so why not this?! The trap school is across the LIRR tracks/yard, near the Vernon-Jackson stop on the #7 line.

Great use of both spaces, BTW. They’ll both attract more people to LIC and help liven up our bar/nightlife scene hopefully.

Looks kind of stupid to me. Anyway, to each his own.

I don’t see a connection between a climbing gym and livening up our bar and nightlife scene.

then you probably don’t know a lot about climbing…it’s huge all over the country and very popular here at Brooklyn Boulders, MPHC, chealsea piers… people climb together and will go out after. i have climbed for years and moved to Astoria and am very happy a gym is coming. so it’s not stupid.

This is a great thing for the neighborhood. I’d join just for the affordable weights and cardio since I dont live in a doorman building that has a gym.

Brooklyn Boulders in Gowanus is very successful even though its pretty inconvenient to get to from many parts. This location is LIC is so much more accessible. They should be able to do very well here. They’ll probably be hosting a lot of parties for little kids too and make bank.
