Cell Phone disruption in Long Island City

1 Nov

A recent (free) text from AT&T…

With the power outages from Hurricane Sandy this week, we’ve all noticed bad service on our cellphones these last couple of days. Lower Manhattan has been hardest hit with no service…but more often than not, our cell service in Long Island City is mediocre at best.

For those who have electricity and cable service we are able to use our home lines. But those who don’t, need to rely on these antennas, some of which are non-operational as they happen to be on top of the buildings in LIC with power outages.

How is your cell phone reception in LIC? Have had to resort to (gasp!) a street payphone yet?

Service good on Virgin Mobile on 41 Avenue. We use towers South of the Bridge

ConEd says that there are 80 customers without power in LIC. Due to the “minimal” amount of customers without power according to the Con Ed rep, it will take a minimum of 4 days to more than 1 week before we receive power as they are addressing the “larger” areas/problems first.

This sucks, and just the block between 5th and 2nd are way more than 80 customers!

It used to have a indicator of power being out by the powerhouse affecting around 400 customers, but that went away around 1pm today. They think they’ve fixed it, apparently?
