Does your LIC street need cleaning?

A street cleaner (not in Long Island City)

We’ve just been informed that the Department of Sanitation is setting up an internal meeting with community board 2 to discuss street cleaning in Long Island City. Pretty much they are trying to figure out if we need it. And in our humble opinion, we do!

This can also open up a can of (dirty) worms as it may require some of the free street parking to be changed to alternate side rules.

You can sign the petition here.

We do! It’s a big discrepancy between Manhattan and LIC in terms of “cleanliness”

We definitely do. And alternate side is fine. I see so many cars who just find a spot and leave their car there for months.

unfortunately, nothing is free. we all paid for those street parking spots. moving your car twice a week doesn’t seem to be asking for too much.

Would be a boon for the various parking garages. I know I’d shell out for monthly parking if alternate side came to the neighborhood.

Yes, The streets are so dirty in LIC especially on Vernon. Trash collects and stops rain water from draining down to sewers. We have talked to Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer about this, please email him as well. His email as following: jvanbramer@council.nyc.gov

LIC needs more than street cleaning! How about the side walks. There isn’t a day that I can’t walk a block without noticing dog feces everywhere. Watch out!

It would also help if the business owners properly bag their trash so it doesn’t blow all over the place and that residents don’t just throw their empty bottles, used food wrappers and cigarette trays on people’s property. I’m outside my building every day sweeping all the crap my neighbors and visitors toss in the streets. Have a little respect, people. If we want clean streets, everyone has to pick up for themselves.

I absolutely prefer dirtier streets to alternate side parking. Not having street cleaning and thus not having to move the car every 2 days is one of the joys of living in this neighborhood.

Let’s be real about this. The inconvenience of everyone having to move their vehicle twice a week is much worse than walking past some stray trash every once in a while. We all live in a huge city anyway. If you want cleaner streets move to the countryside. This LIC resident is shocked that the above commenters would be willing to sacrifice the great parking situation for street cleaning that, in the end, will make the streets only slightly cleaner anyhow.

I have another solution to the dirty streets problem. Instead of petitioning for street cleaning, let’s petition for more trash cans around the neighborhood. There simply aren’t enough places for folks to throw away their trash and adding trash cans at some key intersections would make the streets cleaner without having to sacrifice the parking situation.

The parking on the streets are not clean, its part of everyone’s taxes and a direct subsidy of non car owners to car owners. Car owners are free loading on the Non car owners and imposing an externality on the rest of the neighborhood in terms of trash and long time never moving cars. Moving your twice a week is not too much to ask. If you are not using your car more than twice a week then you have to ask if you really need it. If this is too much to ask then there is a simple answer, get a spot in one of the parking garages.

There are also many derelict cars in the neighborhood that almost never move. THere was one in the front of 4720 Center for over 8 months with a smashed in window! Bring on the alternative side parking!!

The problem with having city street cleaning is that it excuses people who liter and takes away a neighbor/shop keeper’s responsibility to maintain their own property.

Unfortunately, this city is dirty. LIC is an amazing and charming neighborhood because the neighbors have always taken care of their own streets and sidewalks. We park our cars, we move our cars. We clean our own streets and side walks. It’s an industrial neighborhood and we knew this when we decided to live here.

Don’t move to this neighborhood and complain about the streets. We were doing fine before you came.

We don’t need alternate side of the street parking. Neighborhoods with it are trying to get rid of it.
In any case, Sanitation Dept. trucks don’t clean sidewalks, where most of the litter comes from. And when they clean gutters, they just move debris from one place to another while driving 20 mph.
Why not enforce the law that says all building owners and businesses have to clean their sidewalks, plus their gutters 18 inches from the curb. Enforce the law that says cars can’t be parked in one spot longer than a few weeks. Make Dept. of Sanitation trucks clean up after themselves when they pick up garbage and drop pieces of it. Enforce the law to pick up dog poop. Put trash cans at every corner.
Alternate side parking will create economic hardship for many forced to park in garages. It will create pollution from idling and congestion from cars circling around with nowhere else to go. It will be a disaster for the neighborhood. There are other solutions, as listed above.
