John Brown Smokehouse is open

2 Aug

John Brown Smokehouse is now officially open! Located where La Vuelta used to be, the smoked menu includes southern barbecue classics like ribs, pulled pork, burnt ends, corn bread, collard greens and a bunch more.

The flavor? Pretty good considering you’re smoking meat in Long Island City and not Tennessee. Go for the pulled pork and burnt ends…better yet, ask what’s fresh and stick with that!

Great! I’m going there this weekend. Their website is not very informative. How late is it open? Lunch hours?

Really disappointed. I was so happy to have them in the hood but, they are really awful.I got a combo meal with ribs, burnt ends and kimchi radish. Tasted each and tossed the whole thing in the garbage. I literally walked up the street to LIC market and re-bought my lunch.(and no I don’t work for LIC market) Wish it was Hill Country. They really are the best.

John Brown’s Please improve. We need you to be really good. I beg you!

I went last week finally. It was OK. There were certain things better than others. The big fat guy was there and he was kind of a dick…but again, maybe that’s who they are. The brisket was so dry…the burnt ends a bit too fatty. But the pulled pork was amazing. I just think they were having a bad day. And the fat guy didn’t make it any better. Yeah, I’ll go back…but only because there is no competition in LIC.

Great pork belly, good pastrami and ok brisket. Worth going back to, but I was left unsatisfied. So I did the next logical thing and drove over to Fette Sau and killed their brisket, beans, birkshire pork ribs and sausage.
