5Pointz is coming down!
2 Jul
The owner of 5Pointz has stated that they are finally bulldozing 5Pointz next year to make room for (go on, take a guess)….two high-rise apartment complexes.
The Daily News article highlights David Wolkoff’s plans to build a 47 and 41 story high-rise with the possibility of keeping some of the art vibe.
“There will be a continuing program of art on the pedestrian level,” he said. “We want to have some connection to the past and some connection to the future.”

Finally…what an eye soar.
Places like this are what differentiates LIC from Battery Park City. I hope they do keep an element of the art created on this building.
Not a graffiti fan, but a) it is not and was never an eye soar but a great way for legally displaying art and culture (have you seen some of the stuff, it is amazing!)
b) This could have been renovated and become an institution or arts loft, but 40+ stories? UGH!
“The complex would be larger than is permitted under current zoning, so Wolkoff would likely need to apply for a variance.”
Let’s not allow it and let’s make sure Bloomber is not ruining another neighbourhood by giving in to developers without giving back to the community
Come on N, there are too many art galleries in lic. This place looks like it has (and probably had at one point) a bunch of squatters. Probably nasty inside.
It’s a warehouse for them inside and lots of empty space. 5 Pointz is awesome.
Give LIC 10 more years and all the galleries will be gone somewhere else.
No such thing as too many galleries. Case in point, West Chelsea was an industrial waste land with poor transportation, but all the art galleries moved there and now it is one of the neighborhoods with the highest $/SF.
I think the owner of 5 Pointz has every right to maximize the value of his property, but I also hope he realizes that keeping a good portion of the history he helped create will ultimately add to the value of his new project.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, PLEASE SAY THIS ISNT TRUE. I really hope the character of LIC doesn’t get destroyed for the love of new apts. I’m all for re-vamping the area but keeping the character is crucial. If you want to live in a community with just new high-rises, bakeries and bars, then go live in Hoboken.
A real eyesore is that “gentlemen’s” club on Vernon around 45th. Can someone take that down for new apts, please?
