As old businesses shut down and new ones come in, Vernon Blvd. is slowly adapting itself to the needs of Long Island City residents. This shot of the corner deli off 47th Rd. will soon become a one-stop boutique for crying children and stressed parents (Tribeca Pediatrics).  The face lift begs the question: What do you remember about this corner?

Nothing beats a nice game of hoops on a gorgeous day! Believe it or not, Long Island City has quite a few places to play basketball. What’s your favorite?

How Dog-Friendly is LIC?

Our first ever “Question of the Day” is here and we want to know how dog-friendly LIC really is. With the newly renovated dog-run on Vernon Blvd. and numerous doggie day cares, it’s safe to say that Long Island City is paradise for dog owners. But is there anything else missing? How dog-friendly is Gantry Park? Tell us!

Once again Macy’s 4th of July fireworks is not in LIC

Since 2009 the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks display has been moved to the Hudson River, benefiting the west siders and New Jersey. This year, once again, it’s been confirmed that the fire works display will be on the Hudson River, angering many New Yorkers and of course Long Island City residents. So what do we have to do to get them back to the East River? Also, how hard is it to just divide the barges and have one on each side?

Long Island City Library is still a vacant lot…but not for long!

12 Apr

As parents (and book worms) patiently wait for the lot on Center Blvd. to turn into modern reality, inside sources have informed LIC Spot that a dedication is planned next month for the long awaited Long Island City Library next month, followed by a ground breaking shortly afterwards. This is good news for those who have been to the current modestly-sized  library located in Court Square. The bad news, however, is that full completion of the site has now been pushed back to 2014.

BORO Magazine Fundraiser Party this Wednesday!

9 Apr

Our friends at BORO Magazine are throwing a fundraiser party for City Harvest this Wednesday, April 11th. In our books, that’s pretty cool. There will be raffle tickets for sale (which are good for a drink) and plenty of free grub provided by local Long Island City restaurants. Did we mention you can play pool, air hockey, ping-pong, foosball,  hoops, and arcade games? RSVP today!

The 2012 Long Island City CSA is now accepting applications

8 Apr

Nothing beats fresh organic produce.

If you’re the type of person who looks forward to seasonal fruits and vegetables during the warmer months, this CSA is for you! For those who don’t understand what a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is, to put it simply, we all put some money in a big pot that pays a local farmer (in this case the Farm at Millers Crossing) to grow delicious organic produce. Each Wednesday a truck comes directly from the farm and drops off a variety of freshly picked fruits and veggies. You go to the pick up station and pick up your share. A full share feeds a family of 5 for a week. But you can get half shares too. I swear the soil is still warm when I pick up my share! Is it affordable? Prices are scaled depending on your income and applications are now being accepted at LIC CSA right now. The best part about the LIC CSA is that it forces you to cook and eat healthier and fresher food. Oh yeah, and we’re helping local farmers too! Space is limited.

It’s that time of the year again in Long Island City when the Easter Bunny makes a visit to all of the little kids (and yes, some giddy parents). The 3rd Annual Easter Egg Hunt takes place at the Gantry Plaza State Park this Saturday, April 7th between 10am-12pm. There will be age-specific Easter egg hunts, live music, games, prizes, and pictures with the Easter Bunny. All of this, brought to you by Skyline City Church (don’t forget to thank them!).
